Today we attended a lecture on

ug is
Alutiiq for whale. The lecture was given at appropriately enough the
Alutiiq Museum and was given by the museum curator Patrick
Saltonstall. He had a great slide show highlighting whaling here in Kodiak dating back as far as 5500 years and showed some of the artifacts and ancient harpoons that were more like long skinny arrow heads that have been uncovered in
archaeological digs around the Island. Turns out the
Aluets used a type of poison that they put on the harpoon that would kill the whale. Instead of having a line attached to the harpoon they would hunt the whales in bays and inlets hoping when it died it washed up on shore and not drift out to sea and have some lucky stiff 800 miles away get the prize.
The Museum itself is a must visit for anyone visiting Kodiak and one that we have visited often. It has over 7000 years of information and exhibits like the following;
This is a ground squirrel parka worn in the winters, hard to tell by the picture but this thing looks warm
Reindeer or as only we in North America call them Caribou
Our old friend the Kodiak Brown Bear. This one is about 10' and was around 24 years old at his demise
After the lecture and seeing as we
didn’t have a Pizza Hut coupon for a $35 pizza we decided to make our own delectable pepperoni and veggie pizzas
So all in all a good day, finished work (good guys 1 bad guys 0) before the first pitch of another great win, got some history and culture and ate some great pizza.
