Wild Friday Night in Kodiak

Ok so its another Friday night in Kodiak, what to do, what to do. It is the weekend after all, so its time to get wild and freaky. I know... we'll go learn how to hang a net???? what the heck is that, is it code for a crazy night at the dance club (the Mecca)?? or a night of painting the town?? nope its hanging a gill net!! The Mrs. held a class on how to hang a gill net. She had two experienced fisherman Fred and John (one of the Native Elders) come in and teach a crowd of natives and members of the community how to do it and this is the net they will be using for her subsistence fishing program. I can now add something else to my resume.

We started out laying out the lead line (right) and the float line (left) and stretching them out.

Then we laid out the net and stretched it out under the lines

Fred instructing on how to sew the net onto the float line

John showing the Mrs. and her co-worker Perlita how to sew in the net

Once we all got the hang of it it started going quickly

Use number 124 for the Middle East dependent mobile

Perlita was a natural and not only picked it up quickly but was soon helping others
